To DAO or not to DAO (Pt. 2)

That's the question...here's the second part of the answer.

What is there left to say about community? Anyone might be forgiven for being tired of the topic, in web3 and beyond.

In Myosin’s Content Guild alone, we’ve already published three pieces on the subject in our still-nascent Thinkings collection. And yet, community is my personal favorite subject in Blake’s ‘Reflections on Building a Marketing DAO’ — it’s a look into how far that extra effort to connect can go in leadership. Read on for Chevy’s intro to Part 2 (and head to our Thinkings for Part 1 ICYMI!).

Forgive the brief intro this week but, at time of writing, it’s a sunny Friday afternoon in New York City on the cusp of a long weekend and this editor is tuckered out from some very high profile Myosin client work.

Happy 4th and Happy Canada Day to our northerly neighbo(u)rs!

To DAO or not to DAO (Pt. 2)

This time last week Myosin Co-Founder, Blake Minho Kim, walked us through when/where/how DAOs work. That was Part 1, today we cover Part 2 🫡

As we mentioned last time, a newsletter summary isn’t going to do it justice, so we encourage you to click the ‘LEARN MORE’ button below and immerse yourself.

But for now: a teaser. Here are our four biggest takeaways after reading:

Finding your Community Takes Time.

When building a community you need to have a very thick skin - it’s messy!

It’s all about throwing mud at a wall, knowing that 90% will fall off, but 10% will stick.

You then rinse and repeat until that 10% becomes autonomous, and continues to build on itself.

Create Many Possible Pathways for Engagement.

This was our favorite part of the entire two part piece…

Building a community and DAO is like architecting a game. What is the user journey, and how can you give members a sense of freedom, while also providing a clear pathway for them to get involved and contribute?

For guidance, Blake looks to - wait for it - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BOTW).

Click HERE to learn how the BOTW designers ensured players would have an engaging, well crafted experience in an open world game - where anything goes, and linear experiences can’t be forced.

(It draws a clear parallel to the DAO experience).

The TL;DR - a DAO’s development goals need to be ‘sign posted,’ not forced. Instead of delegating, you want to lay the opportunities in front of your community, and let the right member volunteer themselves.

This way, each member takes ownership of their work and moves towards each ‘sign post’ autonomously.

Overcommunicate, Always.

In the asynchronous, globally distributed, chaotic world that is Discord and DAOs, messages get lost in translation & transmission, all. the. damn. time.

And on top of that, people don’t read, are busy with their own lives, and are not required through a given salary to always be in front of their computer for a given time window every day!

So when building and working in a DAO, the reality is you simply have to over communicate. Always.

There’s Always More Work. (So Pace Yourself).

While you need to know when to hit the nitrous and go into overdrive, you also have to become comfortable with slowing down, setting some limits for yourself, and not burning out. I cannot overstate how important this is.

This is a general rule of thumb for entrepreneurs, but especially as a DAO leader, there’s always more tasks, plates to spin, and members to ping, etc.

Remind yourself to take a breath and find some time to touch grass.

…but we’re still just scratching the surface here, click the ‘LEARN MORE’ button below and immerse yourself!

Pssst... Are you a Myosin member?

This week was an insane one, but we made it through the other side with some awesome deals, events, promising new members, and future initiatives.

We are now moving our Members Only Newsletter to Charmverse, which requires 100 $MYO to access.

Click below to catch up on what we did this week, and what's coming up!
